Double Hung Window Repair

Double Hung Window Repair

While the rule “if it is not broken then do not fix it” often applies in life, another important axiom should be, “if you can fix it then do not replace it.” That’s the case when replacing Double Hung windows. When such windows break in our homes, our first response might be to replace them. However, often we can fix these windows rather than replace them.

Here are the steps to fixing a Double Hung Window OR Double Pane Window Repair:

Step 1: Collect the repair parts

This is one of the most important steps in the process. It is vital that you have all of the correct parts with you before you begin repairing the window. Your first option should be to buy parts from the window’s producer, through the dealer from which you bought the windows. An alternative option is to purchase generic parts by mail. Regardless of which option you choose, you MUST have the glass size code for your window. You can find that information stamped onto the face of the window’s cartridge.

2. Choose your repair option

If you decide to take a Do It Yourself (DIY) approach, then you basically have three options, based on your particular level of expertise or window repair needs.

The first option when attempting to repair double hung window projects is the easiest but also the most expensive, and involves replacing the entire (vinyl) jamb liner piece. That includes both of the balance cartridges.

Meanwhile, if you have a modest amount of DIY experience, then only replace the damaged balance cartridge.

Finally, if you have a substantial amount of experience with DIY jobs, then consider a third option. It involves tasks such as:

– Disassembling the broken balance cartridge

– Replacing the damaged locking terminal

– Restringing the pulley device (sometimes required)

3. Remember that jamb liner installation differs

When repairing Double Hung windows, it is important to keep in mind that the method for installing a jamb liner will differ for each variety of windows. For windows with jamb liners on the right side, you must always reverse the direction that you turn the screwdriver, according to the instructions. “Clockwise” should be counter-clockwise, and vice versa.

4. Put things back together again

After you have finished repairing the Double Hung windows, you must complete some particular steps:

– position the vinyl track back into the frame of the window

– reset the tension setting on the sash’s balance

– lock the terminal into the vinyl jamb

– install the window sash

– snap the sash’s top back into the jamb liners

5. Complete the final steps

You are almost finished with the repair of the Double Hung windows! Lower the sash that you have installed. This will release the braking pawls on both sides of the sash. You can now close the window completely.

Remember, a qualify experienced installer can do the work efficiently in a fraction of the time it will take you to do the repair.  Additionally, any damage you do to the window or it’s parts will cost you more in the long run.  Additionally, the parts will be more expensive for you to purchase as a consumer.
